What is a degu?

Degus (pronounced DAY-goos or DEH-goos) also known as Octodons or affectionately "goos", are charming little rodents native to the foothills of Chile. They are close relatives to chinchillas and guinea pigs, and distantly related to species like the capybara and agouti.

Unlike many small mammals commonly kept as pets, they are diurnal with crepuscular tendencies, meaning they are more active during the day and most active around dawn and dusk. This makes them excellent companions for people who want to enjoy their pet without disrupting their sleep. Degus often adapt to their human’s daily rhythm and enjoy being part of your routine. They’re incredibly intelligent, active, social and communicative, with a wide range of vocalizations, body language, and quirky habits.

While they're still rare in the United States, they are prized in European countries and sometimes even preferred over rats for: their longer lifespans (6-10+ years), unique and expressive personalities, lower incidence of health issues in comparison to rats/mice, their minimal strong or unpleasant odor, and their strong bond with humans and other each other.

What makes degus so special to us?

Degus walk the line between “adorable perfectionist” and “chaotic gremlin.” They’ll arrange their bedding to their liking, hide their stash of hay and snacks, and give you the most judgmental of stares for rearranging their dysfunctional design choices. They will throw themselves across a wheel at full speed, bicker with their siblings over seemingly nothing (including which wheel is their favorite, and yes, they're all gonna have the same favorite), and burst into chirps just because they feel like it.

Some staple behavior they're known for is:

-dust bathing, like chinchillas do

-constructing elaborate, sturdy nests using whatever hay, fleece, paper, material available etc.

-complex vocal communication, like chirping, squeaks, grumbles

-learn tricks, solve puzzles, recognize and be alert to their given name

-form deep bonds with their cagemates and trust-based bonds with their humans

They remind us a little of cats- curious and full of pride, but soft once they've chosen you. They love to be around you, rushing their door when they see you, but they also really enjoy playing in their habitat with their siblings or finding the best perching spot. While not immediately cuddly, once comfortable, they will use your body as a climbing gym and demand scritches on their terms.

Degu care

20250207_171726[1].jpg

Degus are considered intermediate-level care pets, not because they are high maintenance, but because they have very specific needs. They have very sensitive blood sugar levels and are prone to diabetes. Their digestive tract is built more for fiber. They should have unlimited hay (timothy or meadow), 10-12g of low-fat low-sugar degu pellets daily, occasional forage like degu-safe dried herbs/flowers.

Degus are active physically and mentally. Even though you should give them as much out-of-cage time as possible, their cage will be their mainstay and should be decked out to the tens with wooden toys, fall catchers, and of course a wheel. They should have at least one level of long, uncluttered, undisturbed run room.
